A comprehensive in-depth look at wines and spirits from the key producers around the world with a more intense focus on tasting technique and requirement to demonstrate greater comprehension, competency and application of knowledge and understanding.   Course is aimed at industry employees with supervisory roles with responsibilities to manage, evaluate and instruct  with confidence wine and spirit selections their quality and world market commercial awareness or wine connoisseurs. Our Tutors are WSET® approved, holders of the WSET® Level 4 Diploma and AIWS members.  They are also professional and experienced corporate trainers who use their knowledge and skill in modern training techniques to add the WOW factor to make each subject matter easy to understand and absorb.

Wine School of Excellence will also teach you the principles of food and wine matching!  We have chefs prepare ‘FRESH FAYRE’ to complement the wines of the day for our students to learn first hand.  ALL INCLUDED IN THE COURSE FEE!

Daytime and Evening Course Content and General Information

(Accredited Level 3 Vocational Qualification with the UK Government’s QCA and pre-requisite for WSET Level 4 Diploma)

Entry Requirement 
WSET Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits highly recommended.
Wine Tasting Taste and describe wines using the WSET® Systematic Approach to Tasting
Food and Wine Matching Principles of matching food and wine.

Grape Varieties Learn about the characteristics and styles of wines produced by the key international and regionally important grape varieties.

Regions, Districts and Method of Production


Factors influencing style, quality and price of wines and spirits in the key regions of: 

France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Central and South Eastern Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, North America and South and Central America.
Number of Wines Tasted Minimum of 30 wines and 4 spirits will be tasted as part of the course
Study Materials Students will receive the Level 3 Award (previously Advanced) course study pack, consisting of the ‘Style and Quality’ course book, specification and study guide together with a Level 3 WSET® Systematic Approach to Tasting card
Course styles and durations Day Release Courses – 1 day a week for 5 weeks plus 1 hour examination
Consecutive Day Courses – 5 consecutive days plus 1 hour examination
Evening Courses – 2 ½ hours one evening per week for 11 weeks including 1 hour examination
Recommended Private Study Minimum of 44 hours of additional private study is recommended for this course.  (Distances Learning 84 hours) 
Examination

Two units.  

Unit One to be completed in 1 hour 45 minutes: - Part I comprises of 50 multiple choice 
questions and Part II is a question paper requiring short written answers which consists of 4 questions of 24 marks each and 1 of 4 marks.

Unit Two examination time 30 minutes: - consists of a practical blind tastingsand the completion of written tasting notes for 2 wines.   


A mark of 55% in each unit required to pass

Results in around 6-8 weeks from the examination.
Certification All students who pass will be issued with a certificate suitable for framing and a lapel pin

Daytime and Evening Programme – BOOKING TERMS AND CONDITIONS



Full payment must accompany the booking form as we do not accept provisional bookings and places will only be confirmed once payment is received.  Bookings will only be accepted on valid booking forms with a fully completed and signed declaration. Payment methods: cheque, BACS transfer or debit/credit cards.

Cancellations of confirmed places are accepted if notification is received in writing up to 12 working days prior to the start of the course.  An administration fee of £60.00 plus vat per student will be deducted.  The remainder of the course fee(s) refunded to the payee. No refund of the course fees will be made for cancellations notified within 12 working days prior to the start of the course or once the course has begun.

Course fees will be refunded in full if the Wine School of Excellence changes a course date or cancels a course if enrolments do not reach the required minimum numbers – notification will be made in the 12 working days prior to the planned start date of the course.

Transfers of a confirmed booking either to another identical course or applicant can be made if notification is received in writing up to 12 working days before the course start date on payment of a £35.00 administration fee plus vat per student.  Within 12 working days prior to the start of the course, no refund or transfer of the course fees will be made. Please note *all transfers are subject to availability on alternative course/examination dates.

Examination dates are fixed to the course onto which you book and any transfer to an alternative date will incur an administration fee of £35.00 plus vat per student.

*All transfer requests must be made in writing or by email (courses@wineschoolofexcellence.co.uk) at least 12 working days before the original examination date.  

Special examination condition requirements due to dyslexia or other medical reasons must be notified prior to the start of the course and supported by a doctor’s certificate or similar document.


Under 18
.  Students and candidates under the legal minimum age for the retail purchase of alcoholic beverages will NOT be permitted to sample any alcoholic beverages as part of their course. This is NOT, however, a barrier for successfully completing this qualification.

Q.  How much prior knowledge of wines and/or spirits should I have before attending this course?

A. WSET® Level 2 Award in Wines and Spirits (previously Intermediate Certificate) is highly recommended.


Q.  What is the recommended self study time for this programme?

A.  Obviously people learn at different speeds and how much prior knowledge of wines and spirits you have before you start the course, will have a bearing on this.  For a successful outcome, we do highly recommend that in addition to the lectures days, all students spend at least 44 hours of self study time.  (Distance Learning option we recommend a minimum of 84 hours).

Q.  How long can I take to complete my studies?

A.  Once booked on to a course, the dates are fixed, however, it is possible to transfer to another course or delay sitting your exam.  Costs may apply as detailed in the terms and conditions.
