February 2010 White Wine of the Month

Gillian Tinney - Tuesday, January 19, 2010
Wine Highfield Estate Riesling 2002
Country of Origin: Marlborough, New Zealand
Our thoughts

A stunning Riesling with bottle age, bursting with citrus aroma and ripe Elderflower, cracking biting acidity and a long fresh finish.  Carefully cellared prior to release, this wine has citrus and floral aromas leading to intensifying and developing mineral and lime flavours. Although it has spent two years in the bottle prior to release, the wine still looks young and fresh, and will surely benefit from further ageing.

Colour : Bright straw with light tints

Aroma : Classic lime and mineral notes

Palate : Citrus and mineral flavours and a persistent dry finish. These will intensify and soften with further bottle age.

Fermentation: Stainless steel 100%

Maturation: 2 years bottle age in the winery cellar

Variety: Riesling 100% from the Highfield Estate

Price: £12.95 inc vat 75cl bottle price

I have tried this wine at the winery in New Zealand and thought it was absolutely stunning. I also tried Cloudy Bay Sauvignon 2007 which was if anything a little flat in comparison. I would recommend this wine to anyone, its worth every penny and I drank it with some very simple scallops in the restaurant at the winery- absloute heaven!

Tried this wine recently and found it well balanced, crisp and fruity. I shall certainly be recommending it to friends and family

2007 better than the 2006 now. Real freshness on the palate and very drinkable

Im a big Sauvignon fan and this is an exceptional wine! Interestingly, definable fresh tropical flavours would recommend to all!

February 2010 White Wine of the Month

Gillian Tinney - Wednesday, April 01, 2009

Wine:

Nepenthe Sauvignon Blanc 2008 (13.5% abv)

Country of Origin:

Adelaide Hills, Australia

Our thoughts

Pale straw coloured wine that is clean and crisp on the nose with hints of grass, citrus and ripe tropical fruit and floral notes. Fresh and powerful on the palate with a well balanced blend of citrus, ripe tropical fruits; passion fruit and pineapple, and grassy herbal flavours.  Good acidity and a long refreshing finish.

Nepenthe Wines harvest the fruit after midnight taking advantage of the cool night and quickly transport it to the winery for pressing.  The majority of the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks with a small proportion fermented in French oak barriques on lees for 2 - 3 months. An intensive selection process is then undertaken to assemble the final wine.

Enjoy young and chilled.  Ideal on its own or with fresh seafood or goat’s cheese.

Price:

£8.99 inc vat 75cl bottle price (Buy 2 bottles save £6.00!)

Really enjoyed this wine, loved the "zing" it gave on the first sip, then it left such a lovely after taste, lovely and fruity. As I live in Adelaide I will certainly be buying it again, and its a good price here.
