April 2012 Champage & Sparkling Wine of the Month

Wine:

Pol Roger Brut Réserve NV Champagne, France (12% abv)

Country of Origin:

Épernay, Champagne region, France

Our thoughts:

Pol Roger, founded in 1849 and one of the few remaining ‘great’ family-owned Champagne houses, blends their Brut Réserve Champagnes from 30 still wines and matures them for at least 3 years.

Sir Winston Churchill was a fan of this regal champagne after tasting his first glass in 1908.  In 1975 on the 10th anniversary of his death, Pol Roger created the Cuveé Sir Winston Churchill, a robust structured and mature champagne to honour the great man and compliment his indomitable spirit and character.

'In victory, deserve it, in defeat, need it'

Sir Winston Churchill
The Pol Roger Brut Réserve NV Champagne with it’s distinctive white foil and label, is beautifully balanced, crisp and dry with a great depth of flavour.  The fine persistent bubbles and creamy mousse envelope the rich and deep yet delicate white tropical fruit, citrus and floral notes that have hints of minerality and a lovely honey, brioche, nutty and toasty long finish.

Decanter Silver medal winner.

Blend of 33% Pinot Noir, 34% Chardonnay and 33% Pinot Meunier

Serve well chilled (6-8°C) and enjoy on its own or perhaps with smoked salmon, canapés or shellfish.

Price:

£32.00 per 75cl bottle  (10% discount on case of 6)

(If you're after something extra special, Betton Wines also stock Pol Roger's Cuveé Sir Winston Churchill (1998) mentioned above at £89.50)
